With over 200 years of history, some of it very tragic, it is no wonder that New Orleans has more than its share of ghosts, and appropriately you can find many haunted ghost tours in New Orleans.
The legends of New Orleans involve pirates, voodoo, murder, and war, and these tragedies have left their mark on the city.
Often on the haunted tours of New Orleans you’ll visit one of the most haunted houses in the city, which is the famed LaLaurie Mansion, located in the French Quarter at 1140 Royal Street. The story begins in 1832 with Dr. Louis Lalaurie and his wife, Delphine. The Lalaurie family were the cream of the social class, and very influential in the city of New Orleans, but no one would guess the dark and gruesome truth behind this family’s prominent front.
It would be the neighbors on Royal Street that would begin to suspect that something just wasn’t quite right at the fine residence of the Lalauries; many of the family’s slave would disappear without explanation, and someone would show up to take their place. What was happening to all the slaves?
Things began to unfold when a neighbor witnessed a small girl jump from the roof of the home to her death, as Mrs. Lalaurie was chasing her. Later the girl was buried in the yard. At a later time a fire broke out, and when it was finally extinguished, a secret torture room was found with over a dozen bodies chained and in cages. They had been tortured in various ways, and there were also body parts scattered about.
The Lalaurie family fled New Orleans never to be seen again, but the ghosts of their torture victims still remain.
This is just one of the famous hauntings of New Orleans that you visit on a haunted tour.
